Preparations are underway to announce a new political party in front of the top leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement. The names of the leaders have not been finalized. However, interim government advisers Nahid Islam, Akhtar Hossain, Nasiruddin Patwary, Hasnat Abdullah, Arif Sohel, Samantha Sharmin and several others are in discussion for the post of convener and member secretary.

Many of the top leaders are mentioning the name of Nahid Islam as the convenor. If the name is finalized, he can resign and come out of the interim government. Akhtar Hossain may be made member secretary. If all goes well, the team will be officially announced any day between February 20 and 25. The name of the team will be finalized first. This information has been found by talking to several leaders of the National Citizen Committee.

Samantha Sharmin, spokesperson of the National Citizens’ Committee, told the media that those who are seniors among the youth, who led from the front during the movement, who understood politics well, will be kept in important positions in the party. He said the political party will be led by the youth. Through the mass uprising, the opportunity to form a big political party has come to the fore after many years. We want to use this opportunity under the leadership of the youth who led the mass uprising. That’s how we work.

Leaders of the National Citizens’ Committee say that all the activities to form a new political party are almost over. They want to go beyond the current political trend of the country and bring forward a new political party based on a different structure and ideology of the mass upsurge of 24. In particular, one of their goals is to boycott the submissive foreign policy and come out of dynastic politics. They want to elect the leadership of the new party and ensure multi-faceted democracy within the party. No one can occupy the top post of the party for a long time. Besides, young student leaders are ready to form a time-befitting political party as per the demand of the people of the country. As a result, the opinions of people of different classes and professions of the country are being taken at the last moment. Meanwhile, the National Citizens’ Committee and the anti-discrimination student movement will not be abolished even if a new party is formed under the leadership of the young students who led the July uprising. The two organizations will work as independent platforms to protect the spirit of the July Revolution.

The leaders said the new political party will be announced through a grand ceremony any day between February 20 and 25. In the first phase, a convening committee will be formed. About 150 student leaders who led the July mass upsurge will be included in this convening committee. The name of interim government adviser Nahid Islam is the most discussed as the possible head of the convening committee. Akhtar Hossain may be appointed as the member secretary of the convening committee of the new political party. He is currently serving as the member secretary of the National Citizens Committee. However, the names of several names including Nasiruddin Patwari, convener of the National Citizen Committee, Hasnat Abdullah, member secretary Arif Hosel, Nagorik Committee spokesperson Samanta Sharmin are being discussed for the post. If Akhtar Hossain is not there, then anyone from among them can be given the responsibility of member secretary. Basically, the youth want to trust these student leaders who led the mass upsurge to form a new political party.

Umama Fatima, a spokesperson for the anti-discrimination student movement, said the work of forming the party is underway. It is not possible to say at the moment when this team will be announced and who will be in charge. That’s why everyone will have to wait until the announcement.

Sheikh Hasina was forced to leave power on August 5 last year in the face of intense student movement. Then on August 8, the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took over the responsibility of running the country. In this situation, the National Citizen Committee emerged in September last year under the leadership of anti-discrimination student leaders with the aim of reorganizing the state, abolishing the fascist system and making the political settlement successful in the new Bangladesh. Then the formation of a new political party was announced. Immediately after this announcement, there was a huge stir inside the country surrounding the new party. How will the team be formed? Discussions between different political parties started about who would lead this party.
