Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has strongly condemned the ruckus at a bookstall at the Amar Ekushey Book Fair.

“Such disorderly behaviour demonstrates a disregard for both the rights of citizens of Bangladesh and the laws of the country,” the chief adviser said in a statement.

The statement said that the Ekushey Book Fair is the fair of the lives of writers and readers of this country. Litterateurs, essayists, thinkers, teachers and students of this country are the meeting place of people of all classes, professions and ages. Such unpleasant incidents at the book fair undermine the open cultural practices of Bangladesh and show disrespect to the dignity of the martyrs of the great language movement of 1952.

Professor Yunus said the interim government has ordered the police and Bangla Academy authorities to investigate the incident and bring the culprits to justice. Police have been instructed to take all measures to strengthen security at the fair and ensure that no untoward incident takes place at this significant place.

The interim government has directed the relevant security agencies to take strict measures to prevent any kind of disorder in the country.
