Quota protest witnesses bloody violence

Clashes between quota protesters and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists on the Dhaka University (DU) campus are still going on. At the time of writing this report at 6:30 pm on Monday (July 15), clashes between two groups are going on intermittently in Doyel Chattar, Curzon Hall, Shahidullah Hall and Dhaka Medical College area.
Leaders and activists of different units of BCL have taken position in the Doyel Chattar area. On the other hand, quota protesters are continuing to clash in front of Shahidullah Hall and Sheikh Hasina National Burn Unit. At least 10 cocktail explosions were heard.
Quota protesters are taking position on the roof of Shahidullah Hall and throwing brickbats. On the other hand, BCL activists are also throwing brickbats at them. According to Dhaka Medical College sources, at least 100 students were injured in the clashes between the BCL and the protesters from afternoon to evening.
Asked about the clash, Sheikh Wali Asif Inan, general secretary of the central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League, told Daily Sun that those who objected to the word ‘Ekattor’ went to the Ekattor Hall and attacked the general students. The hall was vandalized. The students resisted to save the hall.
Earlier in the morning, the quota protesting students demonstrated at the foot of the Raju Sculpture demanding withdrawal of the Prime Minister’s statement and one-point demand. Later, a section of the protesters took out a procession in the Bijoy Ekattor Hall area of Dhaka University. As soon as the procession entered the Ekattor Hall, a clash broke out between the two groups.
The injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Later, the protesters took shelter between Shahidullah Hall and Curzon Hall. There are still clashes going on in phases.
