Bangladesh concedes 5 wickets defeat to Sri Lanka

Charith Asalanka’s 80 off 49 and Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s 53 off 31 helped Sri Lanka to beat Bangladesh by five wickets in their first Super 12 game, Group 1 in Sharjah. Batting first Bangladesh post 171/4 in 20 overs. In reply, Sri Lanka chased down the target keeping five wickets and seven balls in hand. Sri Lanka’s start was not good as they lost opener Perera in the very first over. Spinner Nasum Ahmed sent Lanka opener Perera to give first breakthrough to Bangladesh. Perera misses the slog sweep and the ball cannons into the off-stump.
Ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan struck twice when Bangladesh needed wickets. Shakib struck in his second and innings ninth over to remove Pathum Nissanka (24 off 21) and Avishka Fernando (0) in the first and fourth ball of the over to bring Bangladesh to the match. Mohammad Saifuddin removed Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva for 6 and Sri Lanka to dent Sri Lanka’s chase and the Islander lost their fourth wicket to 79. But Charith Asalanka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa made it the day for the Lankas thanks to Liton Das two easy catch misses. They added 86 off 52 for the fifth wickets stand. Which led them to their highest successful run-chase in T20 World Cups.
When Bhanuka Rajapaksa bowled by Nasum Ahmed Sri Lanka were 7 runs away from victory. They chased down the target keeping five wickets and seven balls in hand. For Bangladesh, Shakib and Nasum bagged two wickets each while Saifuddin took the other wicket. Shakib (41 wickets) now the highest wicket taker in ICC T20 World Cup. Earlier, Opener Mohammad Naim and Mushfiqur Rahim’s fifties powered Bangladesh to post a formidable total 171/4 in 20 overs against Sri Lanka at Sharjah. Sri Lanka sent Bangladesh to bat first after winning the toss in their first super 12 Group 1 match at Sharjah, UAE.
Openers Mohammad Naim and Liton Das gave good start to Bangladesh adding 40 runs for the first wicket stand. Liton fell to Lahiru Kumara in the last over of power play scoring 16 off 16. Liton tried to go over the top and isn’t able to clear the mid-off fielder who takes a good catch over his head. Shanaka is the fielder.
Shakib Al Hasan also went out in quick succession scoring 10 off 7 in the 4th ball of the 8th over of the innings. Shakib was in good touch today but could not prolonge his innings. Shakib backs away from leg trying to flick over the leg side but Karunaratne bowls the perfect delivery clipping the top of leg stump. He sprints away into the covers making 100% sure to not be anywhere near Shakib after the unsavory incident following the first wicket.
Naim and Mushfiqur Rahim put 73 off 51 for the third wicket stand before the former dismissed to Binura Fernando scoring 62 off 52. His innings adorned with six fours. Mushfiqur and Afif Hossain made 21 off 13 for the fourth wickets stand before the latter run out for 7 off 5. Skipper Mahmudullah’s 5-ball 10 and Mushfiqur Rahim’s 57 off 37 helped Bangladesh to post formidable 171/4 in 20 overs. Mushfiqur Rahim’s innings adorned with two sixes and five fours. For Sri Lanka, Lahiru Kumara, Binura Fernando and Chamika Karunaratne took one wicket apiece.
