Over 400 arrested on 1st day of strict lockdown in capital

Police have arrested 403 people in the capital on the first day of a nationwide 14-day strict lockdown started on Friday morning. Iftekhairul Islam, additional deputy commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed the information.

He said as many as 403 people were arrested on Friday for breach of the stay-at-home order and prosecuted under the DMP Ordinance. Mobile courts fined another 203 people for staying outside without a valid reason. Owners of 441 vehicles were slapped with fines worth Tk10,60,500 for violating the lockdown restrictions.

The nationwide 14-day strict lockdown started this morning to contain the spread of coronavirus as the pandemic has so far claimed the lives of 18,851 people and infected 11,46,564 others across the country. The lockdown will continue till August 5. Police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and army personnel have been deployed in the field for strictly impose the lockdown restrictions during the time.
