636 new infected in 24hrs, 8 more dead

Eight more deaths from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) have been reported in the last 24 hours, raising the death toll from the pandemic to 214 in the country. Besides, 636 others have tested positive for the lethal virus during the time. With this, the total number of positive cases climbed to 13,770. DGHS Additional Director General (administration) Prof Nasima Sultana came up with the disclosure joining the daily health bulletin of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) through online on Saturday.

A total of 5,465 samples have been tested in 35 coronavirus testing labs across the country over the last 24 hours. Of these, 636 have been diagnosed with coronavirus, bringing the total number of positive cases to 13,770, she said, adding that as many as 116,919 samples have so far tested. Meanwhile, 313 new people have recovered from the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, raising the total number of recoveries in the country to 2,414, the health official said.

About the eight new fatalities, Prof Nasima said that all of them are male. Two of the new fatalities were aged between 71 and 80, two between 61 and 70, one between 51 and 60, two between 41 and 50 and one other between 31 and 40. With this, the death toll from the pandemic has climbed to 214 in the country. The first coronavirus death was reported in the country on March 18, ten days after detection of the first COVID-19 cases.

The coronavirus, that first reported in China late last year, is now affecting 212 countries and territories around the world and two international conveyances. As of Saturday afternoon, a total of 4,027,110 people have been diagnosed with the virus worldwide, as the death toll rises to 276,386 while 1,393,423 patients have recovered, according to worldometers data.
