Coronavirus cases cross 12,000 in Bangladesh

The tally of coronavirus cases crossed the 12,000-mark in Bangladesh on Thursday with a sharp rise in fresh cases in the last 24 hours. Prof Nasima Sultana, additional director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), in the daily health bulletin said 706 more people tested positive for coronavirus, taking the number of such cases in the country to 12,425.

She said they could not collect the death toll report until the briefing. Nasima said the DGHS will inform journalist about the death toll later in a press release. As of Wednesday, 186 people died from the deadly virus since March 18. Bangladesh reported the first coronavirus case on March 8 while the first death on march 18.

On Wednesday, Bangladesh reported three more death from coronavirus and 790 new cases. Meanwhile, the global death toll from coronavirus has reached 265,051 as of Thursday morning.  It has so far infected 3,821,917 people around the world, the Worldometer data shows.

Of the currently infected 2,255,141 people, 2,206,930 are in mild condition, which is 98 percent, while only 2 percent or 48,211 are in serious condition. So far 1,301,725 people have recovered from COVID-19.
