The director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora, on Tuesday claimed that those who died from the novel coronavirus came to hospital at the last stage, so they had nothing to do in those cases. This claim came at a time when the number of people being tested for Covid-19 in every 24-hour cycle in Bangladesh remained one of the lowest in the world and many people are complaining about lack of adequate healthcare facilities to cater to the needs of patients with Covid-19 symptoms.

She made the statement when she joined a videoconference with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the morning. Government officials of 64 districts, including the cabinet members, were connected in the videoconference. The IEDCR chief said: “A total of 19 coronavirus infected patients out of 49 have recovered and returned home. “Fifteen arrived in Bangladesh from abroad and rest of the patients were infected by the expats.”

She also said: “It is important that the coronavirus patients who have recovered are accepted in society.” Dr Meerjady also requested the deputy commissioners of every district to give emphasis on the issue. The prime minister attended the conference from her official residence, Ganabhaban, at 10am, which was held to ensure better coordination of the ongoing activities to prevent the spread of the virus that has so far killed five people.
